Why Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Trust' in Youngster Pitarch
When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
In only his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to secure a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they appear in a competitive senior international match.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team pursue future success.
Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
