A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country grappling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the central business district on Tuesday afternoon.

Officials stated the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by three individuals, with one shot at him before running away.

The motive of the incident has not been established and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a building close to the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site overseeing the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, according to reports.

"It is alleged the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report said.

Security camera video showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a security uniform shooting on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.

Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the attack.

Crucial forensic evidence, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.

Appeal for Witnesses

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have have information to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been attempting to locate them to establish their location," added an official.

Family and Public Reaction

His sister, a close relative, said the loved ones are reeling to understand the tragedy.

"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," she said.
"It is clear he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about issues not many people were ready to tackle. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the public to not sharing explicit content from the scene, explaining this was an extremely painful time, above all for Stock's three sons.

Life Beyond the Decks

Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that was broadcast on a South African TV network.

Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was engaged in various commercial activities, including protective services, offering elite guarding services and securing prestigious gatherings across South Africa.

He was also understood to participate in building administration and participated in property reclaimations.

National Shock

His death has shocked the country and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his fans, the authorities and political parties.

A senior figure commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's killing.

"He expressed his views without fear or favour. He even spoke up against me and my decisions as a public official. He was a true embodiment of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.

A party figurehead said the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director expressed that "Stock was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a generous spirit who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His commitment to his craft left an indefinable mark."

In a statement, the network he worked for declared Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and sharp wit, adding that his influence "will endure".

A National Challenge

South Africa, the African economic powerhouse, has one of the world's highest homicide statistics, fuelled by property crime and syndicate wars, with some dozens of citizens killed each day between April and September, based on government figures.
