New Trump Doctrine Identifies Europe's Core Issue: An Alleged Lack of Racism?

During his first term, commentators frequently advised that Donald Trump's statements should be interpreted earnestly instead of word for word. However, real-world experience indicate that that formula could have reversed the logic.

An emergent American strategic document coupled with a series of comments from U.S. figures, presidential allies, and the former president have sparked what could be one of the most profound challenges for Atlanticism, the security framework that has sustained peace and democracy in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

While The initial complaint centered on Europe's alleged failure to fund its own security, his vision has now embraced a far more alarming outlook.

Colored by racial prejudice and a staggering contempt for Europe's political institutions and officials, he has issued warnings about the potential of civilizational erosion on a continent he barely knows and mostly viewed from the interior of a luxury vehicle.

However, whereas he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is undeserving because of its embrace of diversity.

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

During the conversation, Trump joins these ideas in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that the Kremlin wants a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe to be weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures between Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European cohesion—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is unfolding at possibly the most consequential juncture for Europe since WWII, amid a brutal conflict in Ukraine and escalating Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Ukraine amid persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring his allies.

The European Response

These developments demands a firm reaction from capitals across Europe. While some leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their pushback, others—like British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "The Prime Minister enjoys a productive partnership with the American leader and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the people."

The undeniable truth is that the president intends his words and repeats them repeatedly. It is past time to abandon the pretense otherwise.
