The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup match against Newcastle.
