Our team is verifying video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
