Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
The governor's tenure as governor concludes in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the former president's team, using his digital presence and pushing a initiative that would expand the party's representation in Congress in response to redistricting by Republicans. This move has made him a target from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on Fox News. The secretary announced intentions to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and warned eliminating the power to issue CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," Duffy said, after a recent tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.
The governor's team pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under federal law.
Duffy had before stated he was blocking $40m from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a last month's release countering the secretary's comments. "For now, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A this month's survey found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has risen to an typical level of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an average of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor remarked while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The notion that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, amazing," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
