Barry Manilow to Undergo Surgery for Lung Cancer.

Barry Manilow announced that he was diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will be having a surgical procedure.

Early-Stage Diagnosis

The 82-year-old singer, whose parade of upbeat chart-toppers from "I Write the Songs" cemented his status as one of pop music’s enduringly popular performers, will have an operation to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to treat the condition, which is detected early.

“As my fans are aware, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a relapse of another five weeks.

“Even though I was over the bronchitis and returned to the spotlight for my residency, my wonderful doctor requested an MRI just to be certain that there were no issues.

“The MRI discovered a tumor on my left lung that must be removed. It’s sheer fortune (and a great doctor) that it was caught so early.”

Concert Delays

He has postponed a series of planned shows, but suggested he would be returning to perform by Valentine’s Day for his long-running residency at his Vegas home.

He added: “The physicians do not believe it has traveled and I’m having examinations to verify their assessment. So, that’s it. No chemo. Radiation therapy is off the table. Just chicken soup and classic TV.

“I’m counting the days until I rejoin my second home for our Vegas run for our special weekend performances.”

Decades in the Spotlight

Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a show at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has spent decades in the limelight and came out as gay in 2017, after tying the knot with his manager and long-term partner privately in 2014.

The couple were in a private relationship for more than 35 years. Last year, Manilow spoke about how important Kief had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.

“As my career exploded, it was just hectic. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can land in a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re on your own repeatedly,” he said.

“But I found my partner right around when it was blowing up. And I no longer had to go back to those empty hotel rooms. I had a partner to be vulnerable with or to enjoy success with.

“I wish that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you get yourself in trouble. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
