Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
